The Dangers of Small Construction Sites

With construction being a common site across New York City, it is hard to believe some of the sites are considered "small" construction sites. However, work being done on buildings that are 10 stories or less are considered to be smaller sites. It is these sites that have been highlighted as being less safe for workers than sites that are on much taller structures.

High Rate Of Injuries And Fatalities

According to a Real Estate Weekly article, the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) recently conducted an analysis of all of the construction accident and injury reports made to the Department of Buildings (DOB). The data reportedly showed that more injuries and fatalities occurred on construction that was being one on

There are many reasons that injuries and deaths may be higher on these smaller sites, including:

  • Less enforcement of mandatory safety protocols
  • Less experienced construction companies working on these projects
  • Less experienced construction workers employed to complete work

These are not always the confirmed reasons, but suspected causes. There are numerous small construction sites that are extremely safe and secure.

Ways To Be Safe

If you are working on any construction site, it is important to take steps to ensure your own safety. Be aware of your surroundings, especially where the edges of a building are. Be vigilant for dangerous situations, such as objects that can potentially fall, unstable scaffolding, or uneven flooring that can cause a trip and fall. Wear a hardhat hat and all safety equipment that is required. Wear safety equipment even if it is not required. Report all unsafe conditions to your boss in order for them to be corrected.

If you have been injured and need to talk to an attorney, do so as soon as possible. The sooner you get in touch with a construction accident lawyer, the sooner your rights can be protected.
