Heads up: Objects Falling From Construction Sites

New York City is world-renowned for its beautiful skyline, dotted with numerous skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. Those who live in NYC also know how frequently there is construction being done on these buildings, often at the top. These are dangerous conditions both for the workers who are on-the-job near the top of the world, as well as NYC residents who are passing by below.

Objects that fall from construction sites or other high-up locations and strike individuals can cause very serious and fatal injuries. Construction workers can take a number of steps that help to prevent objects from falling.

  1. Utilize proper safety equipment and administrative controls. Personal safety is essential, and hard hats can help minimize head injuries from falling objects. However, machinery and other objects must be properly secured and protected with safety features, such as scaffolding or nets, that prevent them from falling from heights. Keeping a no-work perimeter may prevent objects from getting precariously close to the edge of an elevated worksite.
  2. Maintaining clean and organized worksites. By placing debris and garbage in the proper receptacles, and tools back into their storage areas, work areas can be kept free and clear of hazards. This not only protects workers in the area, but workers on the ground and pedestrians.
  3. Post proper signs. Signs on the ground are a good way to alert both workers and pedestrians that work is being done on an elevated surface in the area. This allows all individuals to be on alert. Roping off an area that may be a potential falling object zone may also provide extra protection.

What To Do If You Are Injured

If you do sustain a serious head injury or other severe injuries due to a falling object, it is essential that you seek medical attention immediately. Only a doctor can adequately evaluate your injury and determine the proper course of treatment. It is also in your best interest to talk to an experienced attorney who can advise you of your rights and options.
