Tips to Stay Safe When Walking in New York

Walking or running in New York can be a dangerous enterprise. Not only do you have to watch out for other pedestrians, but you may also have to dodge bike couriers and distracted or negligent drivers. One of the best ways you can protect yourself is to never assume that someone in or on a moving vehicle is going to put your safety first.

Fortunately, there are a few other things you can do to keep yourself safe the next you go for a walk or run. Here are a few safety tips to remember as a pedestrian.

Stay on the sidewalk

In general, sidewalks are the safest place to walk. Stick to the sidewalks as much as possible. However, when a sidewalk is not available, be sure to always walk facing the traffic and use caution. Be especially careful when you are walking in construction zones.

Make yourself visible

If you go out for a walk or run, wear clothing that will make you stand out. Opt for bright colors or reflective materials if you are walking at night or in low light. Consider carrying a flashlight if you plan to walk or run in areas where streetlights are scarce.

Don't get distracted

Whether you are walking in the park or on city streets, it is vital that you stay alert. This means not walking and texting or listening to loud music. In addition, be sure to make eye contact with drivers so that you know they see you.

Cross at the corner

Unless there is a mid-block crosswalk, always cross the street at the corner. The majority of pedestrian accidents happen when people cross the street mid-block. Crossing in designated areas and at traffic lights is much safer.

While the above tips can help keep you safe when you are walking in the city, sometimes it is not possible to avoid an accident with a driver who isn't paying attention or a city bus driver who is driving too fast. If you suffer an injury due to a pedestrian accident, you might be able to file a claim against the person or entity at fault and win the compensation you deserve.
